The CBMN is a northern Canadian initiative which leverages the local expertise of Inuit harvesters to collect and document ecological and environmental data. Using rugged handheld devices, harvesters record a range of species-specific information including population numbers and overall health, along with weather patterns and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).

A core objective of the project is gathering geo-located data. This will ultimately support both the local community and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board in making informed and sustainable wildlife and land-use decisions.
Our team is involved in various aspects of the project, including: software and hardware quality assurance, development of Standard Operating Procedures and other technical documents, on-site training programs centered on the mobile application and administrative console, as well as community engagement and continued technical support.

We also contribute to professional reports, complete with data collation and presentation, and GIS distribution and density mapping. We have presented the project's technical information at regional (Iqaluit) and national (Ottawa) conferences.
A central tenet to the success of this venture is adhering to the cultural contexts. Frostbyte was hired based on our extensive work experience in unique sociocultural environments. We combine on-site meetings with remote assistance to support the local team of community liaisons and harvesters.
The field collection devices used in the CBMN project were selected for the often harsh northern environment. Juniper Systems produces some "tough tech" in their Mesa and Archer II rugged handheld computers. Frostbyte is an active participant in continuous improvement initiatives for technical resources, including device and end-user troubleshooting.
